Okay... I rebuilt X, and a bunch of sundry other stuff, and the tablet now mostly works, though I think the current limitation is in gimp, as it doesn't know the back of the pen is different (the eraser) from the front of the pen.

Damn, I neck hurts from sitting here the last couple days trying to get it working.
