I'm thinking GPU makers have stopped caring about text mode...

When I boot my linux system, it boots into text mode just fine. I can then start x-windows, no problem. But when I leave x-windows (either changing the virtual console or killing X) the video card never leaves graphic mode. I've tried this with three different graphics cards. An old Banshee, and ATI rage, and a new GEXX00 with 128Mb of ram (I don't remember the model number).

This leaves me with some questions:

  1. Is anyone else in the linux world having this problem?
  2. Is there a fix?
  3. Is there a command line tool to force the GPU to do a mode change? vidmode will do this. I will test it tonight.
  4. Is there a command to for the gpu to reset without having to reboot the system?

The kernel is 2.4.20-30.9smp.
Xwindows is XFree86-4.4.0
