I've submitted a suggestion to Live Journal to have an lj tag for doing this they would look very much like the IMG tag in HTML. Like:
<lj-map align=left/right/center valign=top/bottom/center alt="Any Town, USA" width=x height=y zoom=% loc="Some address, coordinates, or location">
And once they have that, they should be able to buld on it by doing To/From maps and maybe even a way to put in a series of map points of your own, so you can show race paths or where you went hiking.
Also the aqbility to tag LJ Scarpbook images and LJ posts with locations and have them show up as points on a map, like with Flickr. Or quickly do a map showing where all your friends are (and color coded to show if they are online or how long since their last post would also be cool).
Anyway, I think it would be a cool idea.
