It reminds me of something I was told by a woman I dated in college. She was Japanese (as in actually born and raised there, so she hopefully knew what she was talking about) and would come back from Japan with all sorts of anime. One of which was Lupin III. Lupin is a master theif, but in every episode he does some good stuff and never manages to get away with the loot. For a master theif, this seemed pretty lame. But as she explainned it in Japan it is illegal to she the bad guys winning in movies or TV shows.
I wonder if religous right would balk at all violence in video games, or if it was some rightous warrior mowing down the minions of hell, if they would say that was alright? Is the issue the violensce, or how the violence is directed?
