The attack started some time ago. There have been bombs being dropped for the past few months, and there have also been covert operations in Bagdad for the last few months as well. There was really no attempt at diplomancy, that was just to smooth people over, the inspections were mearly a formality.

Last time the US went into Iraq, the media wasn't allowed to cover the war. Maybe this time they're not only forbidden from covering the war, but they also can't mention that they're forbidden to.

Or maybe they just figure Americans are sick of hearing about war.
